I can't ever do a just three or just five or whatever list. I do however think that there are some knives that every knife user should at least have tried so they have a better grasp of what they really want.

A three layer SAK, just for utility
A Letherman Wave or Rebar for finding out what jobs a multi can't do
A Stainless Opinel N08 so that they know what a real slicer actually is
    A Spydeco Native, good all-round one-hander
Any of the ESEE-3 or 4 sized FFG fixed blades
    Any Mora

If after that you don't know what you want, I can't help you.
But in the spirit of the thread, out of the current collection what would I keep?
    BM Bugout
    Leatherman rebar
    LT W Next Gen 3V
Only change might be the bugout, for when I get my hands on some of the new Salt series knives, but who knows when that will be, the bugout is probably not a great marine fishing knife.

I too could never do just 3 or 5 knives, I have worked too long to acquire the ones I have that constitute the collection I have built.

I could never be without my CS trail master, master hunter, power eagle,3 of my Reate's (horizon D, Torrent, Wave), 2 of my ZT's (0920, 0804) or 2 of my Real Steels (Megalodons, 2017 and 2018) Each represents something to me as a knife and purchase.
